Dosimeters are an important, reliable tool for the periodic staff monitoring of employees working around radiation. We manufacture a variety of occupational dosimeters using OSL, TLD, and CR-39 technologies. While over 80% of U.S. hospitals have chosen LANDAUER dosimeters to monitor radiation exposure of their staff, our dosimeters and readers aren't just limited to healthcare; they are used by workers in dental, veterinarian, chiropractic, military, industrial, and nuclear settings, too.

Dosimeter Types

Our comprehensive range of dosimeters include whole body, extremity, lens-of-eye, as well as area monitors that you can choose from.

Whole body dosimeters

Whole body dosimeters are usually worn on the chest but are also suitable for wrist and ankle monitoring

Ring dosimeters

Extremity dosimeters are flexible, comfortable rings worn on the finger

Eye dosimeters

Lens-of-eye dosimeters are usually worn on eyeglasses, safety glasses, a cap, or a visor

Area dosimeters

Area dosimeters monitor the radiation levels in a specific area or environment

Who Uses Dosimeters?

LANDAUER dosimeters are used in:

Certain dosimeters are ideal for different settings or situations. For example, LANDAUER Escort is made for emergency and first responders while InLight is recommended for industrial settings such as power plants and national laboratories. Luxel+ is one of the most versatile dosimeters that can be used for whole-body monitoring in most settings. RadWatch is intended for military use, specifically for whole-body dosimetry involved with nuclear detonations, but is also used for civilian emergency responses such as after natural disasters.

The Saturn Ring and Vision dosimeters are designed to specifically measure hand and lens-of-eye doses. Because of that, the Saturn Ring is useful in nuclear medicine, radiation oncology, or source production. As for Vision, it works well in scenarios in which radiation sources are directed toward the face or head such as for employees working with fluoroscopy machines in interventional radiology or cardiac catheterization laboratories.

Dosimeter Usage Guidelines

Properly wearing and caring for LANDAUER dosimeters is crucial to monitor radiation exposure accurately. From the moment dosimeters arrive at the workplace, there are important guidelines to follow when it comes to handling, wearing, and storing dosimeters.

Dosimeters such as Luxel+ will arrive in a package containing two bags: a bag with all the dosimeters and another bag with all the badge holders. Before wearing dosimeters, you need to remove the clear plastic tab at the top of the Luxel+ dosimeter, so the dosimeter can be read properly. Then, place the dosimeter within the gray holder. It is then ready to be worn.

Preparing Luxel dosimeters for use

There are a few different ways to correctly wear a dosimeter in the workplace. The most common location dosimeters are worn is on each person’s chest, however, placements can vary depending on work environments, shielding, and what the dosimeter is measuring (i.e. a fetal dosimeter will operate as an additional dosimeter and be worn across the individual’s waist).

Dosimeters should be safely stored in an area away from radiation when not in use. This can be done using badge boards or another central area for employees to return their dosimeters after completing work for the day. Following these guidelines ensures radiation exposure levels will be accurately read.

Control Dosimeter

A control dosimeter will come with every LANDAUER dosimeter shipment. The purpose of this dosimeter is to monitor potential radiation from the moment it is shipped to the moment it returns back to the lab to be analyzed.

Dosimeter Return and Replacement

Dosimeters are worn by workers for a predetermined amount of time (often ranging from a month to as long as a year). Two weeks before the wear period ends, LANDAUER will send new dosimeters to your workplace. The most recently worn dosimeters can then be shipped back to LANDAUER to be read, analyzed, and the subsequent data compiled into a report. Badges should be removed from the holder before being put into the return package. The gray shipping bag that dosimeters are shipped in operates as a 2-way mailer and can be used to return the badges.

Dosimeter Reporting and Records

From there, the LANDAUER team will put together an in-depth dosimetry report which will include four sections that will list the deep dose equivalent, lens dose equivalent, and shallow dose equivalent data. Those four sections are:

  • Wear period
  • Quarter-to-date dose
  • Year-to-date dose
  • Lifetime-to-date dose

If you have subscribed to additional reports, they will be created and available in myLDR. Below is our full list of optional reports.
